Kaun karega 1.8 Lakh karorki bharpai - Politician should be held accountable for losses

Just as the Winter Session of Parliament was about to begin, the Congress acted swiftly by sacking Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan and Congress parliamentary party secretary Suresh Kalmadi.

Both Chavan and Kalmadi are scam-tainted - former in Adarsh Housing Society scam while the latter in the Commonwealth Games scam. The Congress' wanted to move the sting out of an angry Parliament debate.

But there's a next big target - telecom minister A Raja - who is accused of a telecom scam hitting tens of thousands of crores. The Opposition says Raja must go too.

"UPA has had too much corruption, but there has been too much corruption in the past two Sessions of Parliament. I want to raise the issue of corruption - the CWG scam, 2G spectrum scam and the Adarsh scam," said Sushma Swaraj, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

The allegation is that the telecom ministry sold licenses for second generation spectrum for a mere Rs 1651 crore for a pan-India licence. Some buyers sold stakes in their firms for three times the amount

But now, sources say, the Comptroller and Auditor General's (CAG) report puts the loss at nearly Rs 1.76 lakh crore - twice as earlier alleged. The report is also understood to have said that Telecom Regulatory Authority remained ‘a helpless spectator’ in the issue.

The government is also worried that the CAG would not only embarrass the government but also drag in the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) as Raja has said it was kept in the loop - a fact denied by PMO officials.

Yielding to relentless pressure, controversial A Raja resigned on Sunday as Telecom Minister after being ordered to do so by his party, DMK, in the wake of allegations that he caused a loss of Rs.1.76 lakh crore to the exchequer while allocating 2G Spectrum two years ago.

Raja, the 57-year-old lawyer-politician, who got the coveted portfolio after the exit of Dayanidhi Maran in 2007 and retained it after the May, 2009 elections, drove to Prime Minister's residence late tonight to hand in his resignation after steadfastly refusing to do so for the past few days even as the opposition paralysed Parliament demanding his ouster.

  1. Ashok Chavan said on Tuesday his resignation as Maharashtra chief minister did not prove his guilt in the Adarsh Housing Society scam and claimed he was "100 per cent" sure he would come clean on the issue.

"The acceptance of my resignation by Congress does not prove my guilt in the Adarsh Housing Society scam," Chavan told reporters after tendering his resignation to Governor K Sankaranarayanan.

"I resigned because of the Congress party's moral stand on such issues. I resigned on my own. My resignation has been accepted pending inquiry. The government is not involved in the scam," the outgoing chief minister said.

Chavan said it was not a political setback for him.
"I am 100 per cent sure, I will come out clean on this. There are ups and downs in political life. I will continue to work as a party worker," he said.

  2. Raja, told reporters that he tendered his resignation on the basis of advice given by "my beloved leader Karunanidhi".

"I have tendered my resignation to the PM to avoid further embarassment to the goverment and avoid disruption of proceedings in Parliament. I have resigned.

"That does not mean I am accepting everything. I will come clean and I will prove that I did everything according to the law. I wanted to send a message across to the people. Whatever I have done is in accordance with the rules. I will prove it," he said.

Raja said, "we wanted to send a message to the people that as I said both inside Parliament and outside I did a revolution in the telecom sector. When I took over there was only 300 million connections in the country. Due to my efforts and endeavour today's teledensity in the country is 729 million".

"We did whatever we can for the people and my conscience is very clear and I put in my papers based on the advise from my leader," he said.

The dramatic development came on a day of hectic activities in Delhi and Chennai.

The top Congress leadership met in Delhi and discussed the issue anticipating uproar in Parliament by the opposition which has been demanding his removal.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, party president Sonia Gandhi and senior leaders Pranab Mukherjee and Ahmad Patel, political secretary to the Congress chief, attended the meeting amid growing view in the party that Raja's continuance in office has become untenable and that he must go.

There were unconfirmed reports that senior leader Pranab Mukherjee had spoken to Karunanidhi conveying to him that Raja's resignation would be a better option to avoid any further deadlock in Parliament.

The resignation came ahead of tomorrow's Supreme Court hearing of two petitions alleging involvement of Raja in the spectrum scam.

Also, the opposition parties had made it clear that they would not allow Parliament to function if Raja does not step down.

Ironically, Raja had told reporters at the Chennai airport before leaving for Delhi that, "There is no question of my resigning and there is no need for it."

  3. does any one have the money foregone in 2G scam

INDIA is a country with at population of roughly 116 crore as per http://populationcommission.nic.in/ and with a cellular teledensity of 49 crore as per http://www.coai.com/
Minister RAJA has foregone/ waived Rs 3571 per user that would have been received from cellular license applicants

85 out of 125 licensee who were granted license were not having capacity or infrastructure to operate the telecom business
some among them sold the Rs 1600 crore pan india license to foreign companies at five to six times without any value addition

so who are benefited at the loss of RS 175000 Crore revenue to INDIA it is not general public or mobile users or telecommunication service providers

it is only those who obtain license for paltry sum and politicians in Congress / DMK/ Opposition and sold the same at many more crores
